Centre for Education and Development (CED), Somalia is a non-governmental humanitarian and development organization working in Somalia. CED responds to emergency and development needs in Somalia and assists Somali communities towards self-reliance. CED works with poor local communities through sustainable community development programs to overcome ignorance, hunger, injustice and inequality.

CED is seeking a dynamic, innovative and self-motivated professional to fill the position of Communications and Media Officer

Job Title : Communications and Media Officer

Location : Mogadishu, Somalia

Application Deadline : February 10, 2018

Reports To : Executive Director

Supervises : None

Starting Date : March 1, 2018

Contract length : One year with the possibility of extension.

Job Summary :

A communications and media officer will articulate the Strategies of the organization by commenting, reporting and distributing materials on major topical issues of relevance to the political, social and economic lives of the Somali people. The candidate will work on a communication strategy that popularizes the organizations objectives and plans to the population using diverse media outlets.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop strategies for, and own day-to-day execution of, public relations programs for some of Somalia's most important public policy issues
  2. Prepare briefing materials for organization officials, and manage their public appearances
  3. Have a deep knowledge and understanding of the policy and political landscape, both in Somalia and globally.
  4. Protect and enhance the reputation of the organization and its policies
  5. Educate public, press, bloggers, analysts and influencers about the organizations development agenda and initiatives to solidify peace in Somalia.
  6. Develop and pitch stories
  7. Prepare messaging and other external materials such as blog posts and videos that expound on the organisations strategic plan.
  8. Monitor news releases, Face book, Twitter, Instagram, and any other digital sources trends in politics, economic policy and security in the region.
  9. Prepare regular daily updates, weekly reports, progress reports, monthly reports, monthly updates, quarterly reports and yearly organizations reports.
  10. Produce and disseminate articles, briefings, newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, short videos, press releases, short human interest stories, photographs, and other publication materials about the organizations activities to a wide variety of media including local and external media, donors, organization website, face book posts and other social media and variety of websites.
  11. Responsible for all matters related to public relations.
  12. Translates the main events daily news papers in to English & Arabic (daily headlines)
  13. Responsible for the preparation of the minutes of ordinary and Extra-ordinary meetings.
  14. Provide timely and sound advice to ED on communication, public relations and media.
  15. Any other duty assigned by CED Executive Director from time to time.

Qualifications :

  1. A University degree in communication, media studies, International development, International relations, social sciences or other relevant area.

  2. Adequate understanding of Somalia’s political, social and economic landscape.

  3. He/she should be a good analyst with ability to articulate report and analyse social, political and economic issues that need policy attention from time to time.

  4. Strong news judgment

  5. Good information management and analyses of information

  6. Excellent writing skills

  7. Fluency in written and spoken Somali and English Languages

  8. Video and photo editing skills

  9. Strong understanding of various social media platforms (Examples are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

Experience :

  1. A minimum of two (2) years researching or working in a position whose main responsibilities entailed reporting on political, social and economic issues.
  2. Experience working with a major media house, a communications company and ability to read and write in Somali is required.
  3. Proven experience in the use of social media outlets.
  4. Experience in photography and video recording.
  5. Experience of producing high quality written and audio-visual materials including experience in using relevant editing software.
  6. Strong experience in communication and media strategies.
  7. Excellent communication skills (writing and speaking) in English and Somali.
  8. Excellent networking and negotiation skills
