Organisation Overview

Blue Ventures develops transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation through an integrated approach addressing environmental and health issues. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and we are committed to protecting marine biodiversity in ways that benefit coastal people.

 Summary Job Description

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) is a vital cyclical process within conservation programming which helps us to learn about what is and isn’t working for communities or the environment. By implementing this process we are able to refine our programming and contribute to improved conservation outcomes.

The Blue Ventures MEL team is focused on working with field staff and managers to develop and support them with the right methods, tools and systems to collect the information needed for adaptive management.

The MEL Officer is a new position in Madagascar that will be responsible for providing leadership in the development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and learning across Blue Ventures' conservation programmes and sites throughout Madagascar. The MEL position will be managed by the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Coordinator (based in the UK), and co-supervised by the Country Director in Madagascar. Working closely with the conservation team in the UK and with site leaders and programme technical leads in Madagascar, the MEL Officer will be responsible for supporting teams to develop site and programme level plans that follow Blue Ventures’ broader MEL framework.

The MEL Officer will also be responsible for engaging teams in the MEL process, ensuring systems are fit for purpose and improving them where necessary, for example identifying where new technologies can support improved efficiency. He or she will also support key processes for data management and ensure teams have access to the information they need to make programmatic decisions and report on activities and results to communities, partners, authorities, and funders.
